Wylie Dufresne is not your average restauranteur. After serving as Sous-Cef at Jean Georges restaurant he went into business with his old employer and founded WD50 where he now stands behind the stoves on his own terms. It’s not necessarily a familial comforting experience, more a spot for those of an adventurous and inquisitive disposition, for whom going against the grain is a way of life. The 9 course tasting menu (recently voted best in the city) is a gastronomical rite of passage, taking an average of four hours to fully consume and featuring such dishes as beef tongue with fried mayo & tomato molasses, foie gras mousse with a beet consomme and Manchego cheesecake, foamed pineapple and quince it is guaranteed to take diners to places they have never ventured before, then just as they are becoming comfortable veer away on a new course that keeps them guessing.
