Though the setting is still gorgeous and celebrities choose the hotel at The Mansion as their hideout, it feels more like the home of a very elegant, very rich old aunt than the cutting edge restaurant it once was. And if a restaurant is going to be one of the most expensive in the state, it had better be fabulous. Other than the tortilla soup and the lobster taco, little is consistently remarkable anymore. Our visits have yielded tough enchiladas, too-salty-to-eat venison steaks, and a stale chocolate concoction at dessert. On the other hand, we've had an excellent sea bass dish and phenomenally good steak au poivre. Historically, the wildly overpriced wine list has been long on $500 bottles and short on anything under $60; however, more adventurous selections are being added to the list and there are decent wine glasses. Go for lunch, order the tortilla soup and lobster taco, it won't break the bank and you'll catch a glimpse of The Mansion at its peak.
