Set inside the impressive Fifteen Beacon and with its impressive chandeliers and mahogany paneling contrasting with the white linen and crystal, the setting of The Federalist displays its objective: to be an elegant culinary powerhouse with the price tags to match. It often succeeds. Though the departure of chef David Daniels has resulted in a somewhat less adventurous menu, boldness still factors in: think lobster-mascarpone macaroni, roast duck with brown-butter spätzle and lemon meringue tart with three-citrus syrup. The wine list is one of Boston's most voluminous; the staff among its most polished and discreet. And the bill, we're afraid, will be one of the highest you're likely to see around here.
