There is something magical about Tavern on the Green, which is located just inside Central Park. Helping to set the tone are the stately oaks---wrapped in twinkling lights---that surround the restaurant, the expansive wood paneling and stained glass and the many twists and turns that seem to go on forever. When you book (reservations are recommended, but walk-in seating is often available), request a table in either the cozy Chestnut Room, which often has live entertainment, or the glass-enclosed Crystal Room, so named for the dozens of chandeliers that twinkle overhead. Unfortunately, after seating the magic tends to fade: The service seems to run on autopilot and the food is mediocre at best. The seasonal menu might include house-cured salmon, baby back ribs and jumbo crab cakes to start, and such entrées as grilled Atlantic salmon with tomato salsa, prime porterhouse steak for two with onion rings and rack of lamb with white bean purée---but it sounds better than it tastes. The best way to enjoy Tavern on the Green is to go for a drink during warm weather, when the lovely terrace overlooking the trees provides a wonderful respite from city life.
