Restaurant magazine’s 2006 ‘ Peoples Choice’ award winner Sketch is still drawing great acclaim from London’s diners. The Michelin starred Lecture room of Restaurateur Mourad Mazouz’s unique facility offers gourmet food in an up-tempo, metropolitan environment. The atmosphere here may be somewhat more conservative than the glitzy gallery or parlor sections of the establishment, but still remains upbeat and devoid of any snobbish affectation found in other haute cuisineries. From the outset it is clear that the staff aren’t the inept students looking for petty cash that you get at some restaurants, but rather are seasoned professionals hand picked for their individual skill and professionalism. It helps to know that you’re in the hands of professionals when dining in a place of this caliber wherein every course and morsel commands a wow factor usually reserved for Cirque du Soleil acts. Unbeknownst to most the menu here is drafted by Paris’ super chef Pierre Gagnaire, a Michelin star brandisher in his own right, who produces another masterwork here in the UK with Sketch’s delicately crafted, visually stunning cuisine. Lovingly and painstakingly prepared here by head chef Pascal Sanchez, the results are nothing short of spectacular and are a treat for all the senses. Dishes are complex such as Langoustines expressed in five different ways or Dover Sole with avocado and pear served in a reduction of Farm Cider and sweet madras curry making for a jus d’esprit of flavor and texture unrivalled anywhere else. Dining here may come at a price, but those who can garner a reservation will tell you that the gastronomic experience to be had at sketch, which is not so much a meal as a culinary performance set to dazzle at every course, is well worth it.
