One of the biggest, oldest and most popular restaurants in the Eagle Street precinct, Pier Nine, is a Brisbane landmark. Behind the glass-fronted exterior, Pier Nine is decked out in vibrant ocean blue with pinewood tables and chairs and an open kitchen with a blue backlit glass counter. Corporate types schmooze around the adjoining Tank Bar by day, and a mixture of locals and tourists fill out the dining room by night. Pier Nine’s policy on seafood is “if it wasn’t swimming yesterday, it won’t be used today,” a motto which is a little closer to nature than some Australians are comfortable with, but yes - Pier Nine’s seafood is very fresh, shipped in every day from the best fishing spots in the country. Oysters are a big drawcard, with six regional varieties on offer daily. For entrees, mussels are sourced from Tasmania’s Spring Bay and poached with leeks, white wine, garlic and cream, or there’s North Queensland yellowfin with tograshi pepper, pickled daikon, baby soy beans and sesame dressing. For mains, try whole market fish steamed in paper with fennel seeds, golden shallots and organic garlic, or the duck leg and seafood roganjosh with spiced basmati rice and pappadums.
