>> Locanda Locatelli
8 Seymour Street,
Giorgio Locatelli is that very rare breed of restaurateur, the owner of an Italian restaurant in London with a Michelin star. Of all the Italians in the capital only four have coaxed a star out of the stringent Michelin committee of which Locanda is undoubtedly the most high profile. Since the reservation lines opened in March 2002 they haven’t been put down, a testament to both the dining and ambience of the establishment. True to form Locanda is homely and has a very welcoming atmosphere and staff roster, despite the ultra mod interior. It’s the subtle nuances that make this place work so well. The balance of old meets new is just right, with modern décor and hip crows juxtaposing with age old Italian charm and classic cooking techniques. The equilibrium of the wine list is just as poised with an amazing collection of very rare old wines from the top estates, balanced by plenty of bottles under £30.
longstanding fans who remember him from his Zafferano days will be glad to know that Locatelli has brought some of his signature dishes down the road with him, such as his eponymous anti pasti classic Capesante allo Zafferano (scallops with saffron) whilst newcomers to his world will marvel at such offerings as oxtongue with green sauce or Carrot salad with baby leaf and grey mullet roe. And naturally there’s old Italian favorites, albeit done with typical Locatelli flair, like Sea bass, done here with tiny green fagiolini beans from Risina, Abruzzo style spaghetti with fresh tuna bolognaise, Home made ravioli filled with lemon cream and pork ragu or a sublime summer Crayfish risotto…and with an ever changing menu, taking advantage of the freshest seasonal produce the menu changes even quicker than the hoards of praise come in.
