If life begins at forty then Michel Roux and his protégé son have a lot to look forward to. In what has been unchallengeable tenure at the peak of London’s dining scene Le Gavroche has enjoyed a longevity that a British monarch would be proud of, let alone a restaurant! Now in the capable hands of Michel Roux Jr, Le Gavroche has seen many restaurants rise and fall around it throughout it’s forty year reign but uncompromising guile and a no-nonsense passion for the classic French cuisine it produces has ensured it stays atop it’s perch. What makes Le Gavroche so appealing is its inherent ability to tick all the right boxes without being too clever for its own good. The décor is classic French, looking around one almost expects to see Renoir’s Madame Charpentiere with her children in the corner, with long draping table clothes and romanticist artworks creating an alluring ambience. Servers are an archetype of professionalism and courtesy, always attentive and well mannered and catering to every whim of the diners’ needs. Head chef Michel Roux Jr has some fairly large shoes to step into, but there’s every indication that he’s has taken the responsibility in his stride. Perfectly at home rustling up classics from foie gras terrine with French bean & truffle salad to rib of veal with a creamed morel mushroom sauce & mashed potatoes, Roux Jr even has the confidence and proficiency to make a few individual amends to the menu, like his famous soufflés which many claim are literally ‘to die for’.The wine list, like the establishment itself, seemingly gets better with age with the growing list never ceasing to amaze. Sticking to its roots Le Gavroche has a list of French varietals that possess a strength in depth unattainable in any other cellar in London.
