You’ll be walking through the Kyber pass before you find a better Indian restaurant than this gem. Three floors of delightful rooms are done in Northwest Frontier style -- white-marble floors, terra-cotta urns, carved stone pillars, low wooden rafters, and handsome fresco murals by local artists. Seating is intimate and maximizes privacy -- perfect for a romantic dinner (ask to be seated in the Anjolie Ela Menon Room). The waiting staff, clad in classic pathan robes serve up outstanding Mughlai cuisine and tender kebabs, the likes of which few kitchen’s in India can claim to surpass. The excellent pomfret green masala (fried pomfret fish stuffed with tangy green chutney) is to die for, while Khyber raan (leg of lamb marinated overnight, then roasted in a clay oven) and paneer shaslik (cottage cheese marinated with spices and roasted) are absolutely incendiary. If you’ve come to mumbai for the full cultural experience then no trip would be complete without a trip to Kyber…but it may take a while to find on your own, seen as how after decades of loyal patronage it no longer brandishes a sign outside, a testament to its staying power.
