Since it’s inception by ‘Harry’ Cipriani in 1931 Harry’s bar has been as hot a topic for Venetians as Lucrecia Borghia’s affairs. Birthplace of both Carpaccio of beef and the peach/champagne concoction “the Belini” (both named after artists) this restaurant is the nucleus of the ever expanding Cipriani empire which stretches from the Rainbow Room in New York to the Cipriani private members club in Hong Kong. However whilst guests may like the Carpaccio and the Bellini what they really come here for is the atmosphere. It is not overly smart, but it is stylish: from the comfortable banquettes, to the butterscotch wood trim, from the subtle yellow linen and the diminutive shot glasses to the repeated Harry's Bar monogram across everything, it all speaks of a particular kind of slick comfort. The food is nothing fancy but if it’s a taste of rustic Venice you’re after then that’s certainly what you’ll receive. Situated right on the waterfront at St Marks everything about this place is pure class, think Humphrey Bogart’s “Rick’s Bar” from Casablanca for real and you’re almost there.
