In an ever-transforming and demanding culinary scene very few establishments manage to maintain their run at the top for very long. Hakkasan, Alan Yau's Michelin starred Chinese eatery seems to be an exception to this rule. After five years it's as popular as ever and still offers what most would agree is the best Chinese food this side of the orient. One could be forgiven for wondering how a Chinese restaurant could garner such a reputation as there's a plethora of good Chinese establishments in the UK, but both chefs and pundits agree that Hakkasan remains a very special place to dine. In 2006 'Restaurant magazine' declared it to be the world's thirtieth best restaurant (with Yau's other Michelin starred London restaurant Yauatcha nipping at Hakkasans' heels in 48th) an achievement that proves, if nothing else, that Hakkasan's Chinese cuisine can measure up to modern eclectic establishments offering French, Japanese and Italian delights. Head Chef Chong Chee Hwee produces old favorites like award winning Peking Duck and Hot and Sour soup alongside some original flamboyant signatures like roast silver cod in champagne and Chinese honey. The food is not the only spectacular thing about this place however, Hakassan's interior is perhaps the most glamorous dining space in the capital. The Christian Liaigre designed space recreates the fašade of a moonlit oriental night with subtle ambient lighting and deep colored furnishings, making it the perfect place for celebrities and beautiful people to enjoy a secluded dim sum or two. And the service is just as glamorous, with the smiling servers clad in uniforms designed by renowned fashionista Hussein Chalayan. To top the evening off the impressive bar boasts some colorful signature Ling Ling cocktails or one can enjoy a glass of wine from the sommelier's adventurous globe spanning list. Pragmatism is one of the restaurateur's greatest strength's and Hakkasan demonstrates this admirably, perfectly at home catering for a romantic special occasion or a large group booking.
