Grill 23 ushers the classic American steakhouse into the twenty-first century. Yuppies and board chairmen hold court over huge slabs of meat. Big red wines flow like chatter on the trading floor. While we love the show, we relish the fare, too. Chef Jay Murray is no chop chump: though the steaks are the stars, the whole menu is a class act, from aged cheddar soup with ham croquettes to truffled tater tots to elegantly luscious sweets like pumpkin cheesecake with spiced cider. Meanwhile, Murray’s “weekly cuts” selection aims to give workaday steaks like Scotch tenderloins and flat-irons their due in charming (and slightly cheaper) bistro-style preparations. And an outstanding wine list likewise balances showpieces with genuine finds. Across the board, Grill 23 delivers blue-chip consistency.
