When owner Danny Meyer and chef Tom Colicchio opened Gramercy Tavern in 1994, they set out to revolutionize New York fine dining---taking away the pretension and infusing it with rustic charm and congenial, though highly professional, service. The years since have proven they've done a good job. The elegant eatery feels almost like a country inn---the huge space is divided into a casual tavern room, adorned by a colorful mural of tempting fruits and vegetables, and three more formal dining areas with gorgeous flowers, tapestries, antiques and artwork. Though the menu is devoted to reinterpreting American food, the kitchen also borrows ideas from other cuisines---especially journeying through the Mediterranean. The menu is seasonal, but you can usually count on lusty dishes like saddle and rack of rabbit with olives or monkfish with pancetta. From the day the restaurant opened, we've loved the variations on fresh fish and seafood, particularly the autumn menu which might feature Maine crab meat with sweet pea purée, bacon and pink peppercorns. The cheese board is exceptional. In the dining rooms, there is a three-course, prix-fixe dinner. The menu in the more casual Tavern is shorter, simpler and less expensive, and unlike most restaurants of this caliber, it is served throughout the day with no downtime between lunch and dinner. If all you can get is a seat at the bar, take it. Lunch is served in the dining room only on weekdays.
