For those who seek a taste of Fremantle's yesteryear charm, Essex Restaurant offers classical cooking in a tastefully restored 120-year-old limestone cottage. Throughout five intimate dining rooms, the walls are dotted with fascinating photographs and memorabilia that chronicle the history of Fremantle and Perth. In the bar, hanging over the original fireplace, the history of the Essex itself unfolds in an impressive collection of awards dating from 1995. Head chef Mark Spencer lures you with an extensive array of delicacies fresh from the WA. Maybe you'll be tempted to drop in for a few freshly shucked oysters with a glass of wine from the national award-winning wine list. Or perhaps you'd prefer to take your time to enjoy a pre-dinner classic cocktail in the bar before tucking in to the grilled Balmain bugs and bug ravioli or beef Gabrielle filled with local scallops, grilled and topped with garlic cream and served with potato mash. Finish off with the amaretto and pear cheesecake - all served with a slice of generous WA hospitality.
