Whilst not strictly in Barcelona those who make the 50km journey to the small Catalan citadel that houses the exceptional Can Fabes will be glad they have made the trip. Can Fabes is a rustic gem situated within a gourmet citadel, housed in a 3-century-old building. This Michelin three-star restaurant is run with exquisite care and dedication by veteran owner Santi Santamaria, who’s been at the helm since the 80’s. The restaurant is refined and elegant yet retains a rustic aura thanks to its charming setting and décor. The food is, for lack of a better word, perfect. Hot and cold mackerel with cream of caviar and tender pigeon with duck tartare are examples of dishes that blend the finest ingredients with the chefs’ masterful technique. Another heavenly concoction is spicy foie gras with Sauterne and a coulis of sweet red and green peppers, a culinary master-craft, at a level Ducasse would be proud of.
