First opened in 1933, the Drei Husaren has, over the years, become recognised as one of the most prestigious eateries in Vienna. With a name derived from the three army officers (Hussars) who originally founded the restaurant, it gives patrons the chance to sample some of the best traditional Viennese cooking in extremely elegant surroundings.Guests usually start their meals with a selection from the hors d'oevres trolleys (something of a legend in Viennese culinary circles) before moving on to "die klassischen Drei Husaren gerichte" (classic Drei Husaren dishes) such as tafelspitz (boiled beef) and ausgelöster kalbskopf in butterschmalz gebacken mit sauce tartare und erdäpfelsalat (fried calf's head with tartar sauce and potato salad). However, if you're not tempted by such delicacies, there's a wide-choice of more familiar menu items.Desserts are truly mouth-watering affairs, with bananenmousse (banana mousse) or husarenpfannkuchen (pancakes filled with a walnut paste and topped with a chocolate and strawberry sauce) being just two of the delights on offer.
