Robert Del Grande, Café Annie's creative genius, is Houston's most celebrated of celebrity chefs. His pioneering of New Southwestern cuisine in the 1980s deftly demonstrated that chilies, tamales and avocados could hold their own as staples of fine dining. Café Annie continues to dazzle and lead the serious foodies to contemporary discoveries, as well as attracting the mover-and-shaker professionals and Chanel-clad socialites for whom it has become a default destination. Del Grande's ever-evolving menus work traditional Mexican flavors into a sophisticated contemporary cuisine that respects its roots. Of the many dishes we adore, there’s the lovely stacked crab tostada, the petite enchilada of shredded rabbit with red chile mole, and the roasted quail with house-made duck sausage. Among the entrées, dishes like lamb chops with black Oaxacan mole, a coffee-crusted Black Angus filet and farm-raised redfish beguile us. The chocolate soufflé cake sends us home in a blissful stupor. The notable wine list is an amazing, educational read. If dining spontaneously, scoot up to Bar Annie (within the restaurant), where you will find cozy banquettes and small tables set with linens and a menu that mimics the big room.
