Half Restaurant Half Night club Butter is a magnet for all that’s glitzy and beautiful when the sun goes down in New York. Above ground is the main restaurant, a great windowless dining hall with vaulted walls of cedar. At one end is a swank bar, and at the other is a lovely, translucent wall mural depicting a forest of birch trees on a summer day. All very Zen-like and soothing. Underground lies the Birch Room, a dimly lit Club where D.J’s spin their wares until the wee small hours. Executive Chef Keith Harry cooks up some excellent no-frills fare including Seared Tuna with Lemon Risotto, Raw Hamachi doused in ginger and Ostrich with white asparagus and red wine and bone marrow reduction. Afterwards addle yourself with a series of loopy designer cocktails or ogle various knickknacks put up for sale by notable socialites, celebrities and cultural gurus. These charity items (watches from Christian Dior, a cartoon by Gary Trudeau) are listed on the dessert menu, right next to de rigueur items like a milk-chocolate walnut cake and a gooey chocolate gratin.
