Cosily nestled in Berkeley square this classy Indian establishment is the new cooking ground of messr Atul Kochhar, the Michelin Starred super-chef behind Mayfair’s illustrious Tamarind restaurant. With its subtle, ambient lighting and simple yet elegant eastern décor the establishment creates the feel of the Holy Indian city from which the restaurant derives its name. It is to Mr Kochhar’s testament that he offers traditional dishes cooked to the highest order, whilst at the same time including some shreds of originality that serve to outline his natural inquisitiveness and unquestionable culinary aptitude. Favourites such as Lamb Rogan Josh sit alongside spinach and cottage cheese remoulade and curried chicken found a friend next to the accoutrement of yellow lentil consume. The result? A delightful experience that ticks all the right boxes. At Benares you get what you expect and then some, classic Indian Fayre delivered with some of Kochhars signature flair to remind you that this is no ordinary venue. Original house cocktails and old favourites alike are jus d’esprit in the friendly and comfortable ambience of the bar, perfect for an after dinner tipple or an aperitif. The dark furnishings and dim, subtle lighting create a fabulous ethereal atmosphere, further enhanced by the scented lavender and jasmine floral candles (available at a snip for £14) and acquiescent Indian musical soundscape.
