Aurora is mostly Dallas deluxe, from the floor-to-ceiling curtains that separate you from the mundane world outside to the silver candlesticks with tall tapers on the table and the tuxedoed waitstaff there to coddle patrons lucky enough to have snagged one of the dozen or so tables at this little jewel. Then there are some not-so-deluxe touches like the Peter Max paintings and a peculiar Art Deco-inspired etched glass wall that separates the kitchen and dining room and lets you view the chef in action. And the menu is the same story. A luxurious and lush foie gras comes in a Banyuls jus; chilled cucumber and avocado soup is deceptively simple and delicious; and an extraordinary rack of lamb with mini chops induces swoons. But on one visit mini baguettes are rock-hard; the waffled potato cone holding a fluffy dollop of whipped purple potatoes is not a hot crispy shell but chewy and clammy; and thin slices of Dover sole that enwrap scallops are dry, leathery straps. And on it goes, the divine and the pedestrian eternally linked. The menu changes weekly, servers are very well-informed and both the cocoon-like main room and intimate wine room are peaceful retreats at the end of the day.
