Abacus, in a space that was once a pool hall, is a sleek, well-mellowed monument to the culinary talents of long-favored chef Kent Rathbun, who has in turn wisely handed over day-to-day operations to his talented protégé, Tre Wilcox. The menu travels the globe---especially the appetizer list, which features Asian and Southwestern influences. Toss back a couple of the infamous lobster shooters served in chili-and-coconut-spiked saké to get the palate going. Then it's on to the ever-expanding sushi list---for which we say, go with whatever special your server recommends. Next comes a dilemma: do a Big Plate and call it dinner or order up a few Small Plates and call them tapas. Be advised that the Big Plate options come in unwieldy half-bowl/half-plate concoctions that make cutting something as scrumptious as the duck breast with fig confit on a bed of fluffy whipped potatoes quite a chore. To end, after a big meal a simple sorbet is the way to go, among which we like the raspberry-Amaretto version---though we must admit that all the decadent cakes, pies and brűlées are divine.
